Popular Teeth Whitening Treatments
Sometimes, no matter how much care one can give to the dental hygiene, teeth can still have a discolor appearance. Many people opt to do teeth whitening procedures since if teeth don’t look as white as they can be, they will portray a sense of an unhealthy mouth. Some of the reasons why teeth might discolor have to do with the drinks and foods we consume. Daily eating or drinking coffee, wine, soda, tobacco, and such are the most prominent contributors to teeth stain. Teeth whitening is getting more accessible now since these treatments can be performed in a dental office as they can be implemented in your own home. Therefore, it is essential to search what treatment will work best for you before committing to any.
Laser Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening has become one of the first requests that dental patients have when visiting their dentist.
Laser teeth whitening is administered in a dental office exclusively and is the most expensive method for whitening. Bleach is applied to each tooth, and heat generated by a laser enhances its effectiveness while ultimately speeding up the process. This procedure uses a strong bleaching gel that the laser activates and enhances for quick, dramatic results. The bleach used is a hydrogen peroxide gel that ranges from 25 to 40 percent in concentration levels. With these high concentrations, special precautions are taken to reduce tooth sensitivity, as well as protect the lips, gums and other oral tissues from being damaged.
Laser teeth whitening takes about an hour in the dental office. Oftentimes, several treatments are needed to achieve the desired results and bleaching trays for home use may be needed as well to improve or maintain those results.
Laser teeth whitening isn't for everyone and is just one option to whiten your teeth. To find out more about teeth whitening, schedule a consultation at Main Street Dental by calling us at 603-536-4009.
Take-Home Whitening Trays
Take-home whitening trays are a type of teeth whitening procedure that you can perform in the comfort of your home. This is an easy and cost-effective teeth whitening treatment that can be easily obtained. You must follow the instructions provided by our dentist to see the results at home. Although they can be a convenient option, obtaining great results can take longer than other treatments and they don’t always work as well for deep stains. These trays are custom made to go over your teeth, and whiten your teeth through a special gel that is found on the inside of the trays.
Theses trays, once made for you, can then be taken home as a teeth whitening kit, along with the guidelines given by our dentist. The time that they must remain on your teeth can vary according to your teeth whitening needs.
How Take-home Whitening Trays Work
Custom whitening trays are trays that are clear and are usually made of a clear plastic that comfortably adjust when inserted. A small dollop of gel is inserted in each tray, giving them their whitening properties. The gel consists of a hydrogen peroxide solution that actively whitens the enamel of the teeth.
After they have been used and are taken off, they need to be cleaned with a Q-tip or a cloth and rinsed. This makes them ready to be used again. It is not suggested to use them for at least another day, after each application.
These whitening trays can be used several times to obtain the desired results. Our dentist can further inform you on how many times they should be used. Also, you can have them customized to your specific needs.
Zoom! In-Office Whitening
Over the years, we have seen many new teeth whitening options. Some of them have used a multi-stimulus approach to teeth whitening, and are generally considered more invasive than the whitening trays. Although they may be somewhat more invasive, they are still harmless and provide excellent results; however, they must be performed at our dental office.
Zoom! is one of the whitening methods that have proven to provide excellent results. The outcome is effective and can produce visible results in as little as one session.
How the Zoom! In-Office Whitening System Functions
First, the dentist performs a comprehensive exam to highlight any dental problems which need to be addressed before the hitening treatment is performed. This guarantees that the Zoom whitening procedure works as effectively as possible and prevents any future damage to the teeth. If no such conditions are found, then our dentist conducts a teeth cleaning procedure, which prepares the teeth for the application of the whitening gel.
Our dentist then applies mouth spacers to avoid the cheeks or lips getting contact with the teeth. This is needed to protect the softer tissue from the whitening agent to prevent any irritation.
Then, the teeth whitening gel is applied to the teeth. This gel consists of a hydrogen peroxide solution that serves as the active ingredient that whitens the teeth.
After the gel has been applied, our dentist focuses a bright ultraviolet light on the teeth. This light acts as a catalyst and causes oxygen to be produced through a chemical reaction within the gel. This oxygen permeates the upper layer of the teeth, and bleaches them from within. The upper layer of the teeth is also bleached in this way. The oxygen works to remove the stains both on top and within the enamel.
Next, our dentist cleans away the zoom whitening gel and the procedure concludes.
